To understand Äja Dynasty, you have to travel through Nepal. Our collections lead us from the old cities of the Kathmandu Valley to the hills and mountains beyond it, following materials, skills and traditions that belong to particular places and communities. In Thimi, generations of Newar potters have worked with clay. Here, pieces shaped and finished by hand become ceramics for the table, the home and our collections. In Patan and Bhaktapur, the extraordinary Newar tradition of carving, metalwork and architectural ornament continues to inspire us. The carved windows, temple struts and intricate patterns found throughout the Valley are not simply decoration: they are a visual language developed over centuries. Elements of this heritage find new expression in our contemporary designs. Beyond the Valley, other materials tell other stories. Allo, the Himalayan giant nettle, grows wild in Nepal’s hills and mountains. Its fibre requires knowledge, patience and many stages of hand processing before it can be spun and transformed into textile. We work with this extraordinary local material in products that allow its natural texture to remain visible. Traditional weaving connects us with Tamang and Chepang makers and women artisans, whose knowledge of fibres, colour and handwork becomes part of our bags, textiles and accessories. In the Terai, the world of Mithila art brings an entirely different visual energy — bold lines, vivid colour, nature, mythology and stories traditionally painted and preserved by generations of women. We reinterpret elements of this artistic language in selected Äja Dynasty pieces. And there is lokta, Nepal’s remarkable handmade paper. Made from the bark of Himalayan Daphne, it has been used for centuries for manuscripts and important documents. Today we transform it into notebooks, boxes, cards and packaging — giving an old material a place in contemporary life. Nepal is not one craft tradition. It is many. For Äja Dynasty, these communities are not simply sources of production. They are partners in a creative process and part of the cultural landscape from which our collections grow. We want traditional skills to remain more than memories of how things were once made. We want them to remain useful, desirable and economically meaningful — so that knowledge inherited from previous generations has a reason to continue into the next. Heritage stays alive when it continues to be made, used and valued.
